THE WEST: WORKING ON THE RAILROAD
Activity: You and your team memebers have been asked to create a transcontinental railroad from New York to California. However, you and your team memebers are constrained with the fact that you only have a $3.5 million budget for this project. Complete all activities and successfully build a railway system between these two states.

Activity One: Import and print out a copy of a topographical map of the United States from either your text, the internet or from a CD encyclopedia.

*Find a map that has a measurment scale.

ex. 1"=500miles

Activity two Using your map and a ruler, construct several railroad routes between the cities of New York and San Francisco.

Activity Three: Measure the distance of your routes. Calculate the price of each your railroad routes. Find the most cost effective route.

*Note the Following: 1 sq mile =$350

Total budget for project= $3.5 million

Activity Four: Compare your route to that made by the different groups Activity Five: Research the building of the first Transcontinental railroad system. Each group is responsible to create at least 3 questions on this topic to be shared later with their classmates
