Project Description: New York City is often called a "Melting Pot" because there are people from many diffrent cultures and countries, that live and work here. Understanding these differences can often help you understand your own cultural groups contribution to this so called melting pot. In this activity you have been asked to study and research a particular cultural group. Complete each activity in its sequentail order. Once each of these activities are completed, you will be asked to present your findings to the class. Groups are encouraged to use any graphics and sounds from the internet; as well as information from other sources such as CD-ROM's or textbooks

Activity One

In groups of 4- 6 students locate your community on a map of New York City.

Activity Two

Brainstorm ideas about the different customs and culture of the neighborhood surrounding the school using locally owned restaurants or stores, places of worship or other community meeting centers and areas dedicated to sports or other recreation activities as your starting point of reference. Discuss what makes the neighborhood unique.

Activity Three

Tour this neighborhood and taking digital still pictures or video of some of the places or things listed during your brainstorming session

Activity Four

 

Download these pictures and video to teh computer and create a photo essay based on your experience. Discuss what you have learned from this experience

Activity Five

Research the internet to find additional information about the ethnic group that you have selected. Include research on the music, art, thearter and sports of your selected group.

Activity Six

Prepare a typical food dish from the cultural group that you have selected. Share this food with your classmates during your presentation or during a class period celebrating International cultural groups.
