
Students and staff prepared, produced, directed and performed William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream for our school community and the students and staff of neighboring P.S. 119. The hard work of all involved was evident to anyone who had the pleasure of seeing the play.
Students, parents and staff were treated to a weekend excursion to Club Getaway in Kent, Connecticut earlier this year. While the students all remember the fun they had on the trip what they claimed to remember the most was when their teachers and their principal got on stage and sang during Karaoke Night.
I.S. 125 was selected as official New York City Hosts for John Glenn and the rest of his astronaut team during their visit to NY for the ride through the "Canyon of Heroes". Selected I.S. 125 students and staff were treated to a wonderful breakfast at the Museum of Natural History and even got to ride on the official float with the astronauts, the mayor and the chancellor during the Ticker Tape Parade.
This May fifty students, staff and parents are taking a weekend trip to our nation's capitol. The Washington D.C. trip will be filled with fun, food and of course many educational opportunities. The tours that are planned are sure to be entertaining as well as educational.
This year's Academic Olympic Team led by Assistant Principal, Mr. Mendelson, is on it's way to continuing our FIVE year undefeated streak. Being the four time District 8 Champion the last four years the pressure is on this year's team as they "Strive for Five"
The students of I.S. 125 were treated to a very interesting and informative day when professionals from a variety of career fields visited the school in 125's annual Career Day. The students learned many things about the different careers that they heard about. The presentations and the questions and answer period that followed surley gave our students a real look into their possible future career choices.
Early one Saturday morning members from New York Cares as well as student,staff and parent volunteers came into IS 125 to help beautify our school. The murals that were painted throughout the school, the planting that took pace in the garden areas outside and the over-all cleaning of the building left IS 125 looking a lot more beautiful
I.S 125's "Spirit Week" took place the week of February 8th-12th, 1999. Spirit Week was a tremendous success and most of the students and staff participated. Monday was "Pajama Day" when everyone came in dressed in pajamas. Tuesday was "Sports Day", everyone came in wearing jerseys supporting their favorite teams.Wednesday was "Dress Like A Teacher Day" where the students got to dress up like their teachers.Thursday was "Dress Like A Twin Day" and Friday was "Crazy Hair Day".
Walks around the halls of IS 125 and you can't help but notice the beautiful art work hung up everywhere. We have outside artist that come to our school to teach our students and train our subject teachers about how art can be used to teach Communication Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Music in their classrooms.
There is an annual musical production in which all students may participate. In the past our students and faculty have performed in Grease and West Side Story.
Field trips are carefully and thoughtfully planned in terms of learning experience and enjoyment. From time to time teachers may schedule a trip to enhance a classroom project or unit of study. Parents must sign permission slips for each trip that they wish their child to attend. Children whose parents choose not to grant permission will continue their educational program at school. In addition, there is an annual school trip to reward children for their academic achievement and service to the school. These students have toured Washington D.C., Boston and Montreal.
The Gifted and Talented Fair is held every year in the late spring, and is an opportunity to highlight the achievements of all our students. Classes, staff and parents are invited to view the fine work and projects on display in our library.
Holidays are celebrated at I.S. 125 with school dances. These dances are held in our festively decorated cafeteria, chaperoned by our staff and feature music by a professional DJ. Students who achieve placement on the Scholarship List, Honor Roll, or Principal's List receive a free admission ticket to these dances.
Students make daily broadcasts of local,national or international news. In addition, broadcasters lead the entire school in the recitation of our Pledge of Allegiance and make announcements regarding all school related activities. This program is run by our Social Studies department, and all classes participate in this activity.
I.S. 125 is proud to be a member of the National Junior Honor Society. All the students who qualify for the Honor Roll or Principal's List for the entire school year are inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at a beautiful ceremony in June. At the ceremony the students sign the Honor Book, receive an honor pin and an honor certificate.
Our students are recognized for their academic acheivement. Those who attain an 80 average with no N's or U's on their report cards are placed on the Scholarship list. An 85 average will put the student on the Honor Roll, and a 90 average earns the student a place on the Principal's List. These scholars are rewarded with a certificate, special trips, free admission to school dances and are honored at a Scholarship Night
A Science Fair is held in all science classes each year. All students are invited to participate, and awards are presented for the most innovative projects.
Each year we honor our seniors with special activities. They may purchase school jewelry and are photographed with all members of their eighth grade class. In June, the eighth grade goes on a senior trip and celebrates at a senior prom. The students' years at I.S. 125 culminate with a beautiful graduation ceremony at Lehman H.S. Family and faculty watch with pride as we see our seniors in their caps and gowns.
I.S. 125 has a school wide Spelling Bee every year. Each class has an individual Spelling Bee and the class winner participates in the school Spelling Bee. The winner of the school Spelling Bee competes against winners from other schools in the District 8 Spelling Bee.
I.S. 125 participates in the City Wide Story Telling Contest. The school contest is open to all students, and students can choose to tell a myth, fairy tale or legend.
The Student Government meets on a regular basis throughout the year with a faculty advisor. Representatives from all classes are elected in homeroom in the fall. Officers are elected in a grade-wide vote after campaigns are concluded.
The I.S. 125 Game of 24 Tournament participates in the district wide competition. First place winners in this event go on to compete in the New York regional competition. Our students have successfully competed in this event for the lasy five consecutive years.
This program is run in conjunction with City Center. Twice a year City Center comes to our school and conducts workshops with the involved classes. Twice a year our classes are invited to City Center to see a special performance. Teachers who are involved in this program attend training workshops before the school year starts.
