Ms. Basileo - School Librarian

Library History

There was no library in the school between 1988 and 1999. When Ms.Mendoza came to P.S. 14 as our new principal, she realized the need and importance of a school library. She was the dreamer, the catalyst who "set the wheels" in motion. Special thanks go to the P.S. 14 P.T.A., Ms. Judith McGowan, District 8 Librarian, and, of course, State Senator Guy J. Velella, who supplied a great deal of money necessary for this vast undertaking.

Library Schedule

The library operates on an "Open Access" philosophy. Research has shown that when children have the freedom to visit school library when they wish, reading increases, as does reading comprehension, and thus, reading scores.

"Open Access" allows the children to visit between 8:30-9:00, 11:00-12:10 and 1:10-2:30. Visits depend on permission from their classroom teacher.

Class visits are scheduled at least once a month, during periods 1, 2 and 3, depending on the day. Teachers schedule additional appointments for special borrowing assignments and/or research.
