JULY 2000

NavigatR challenges all HomeBase8Å students and families to learn and have fun with a new set of questions. For we leave your beautiful planet Earth and venture deep into the Solar System. NavigatR wishes to learn more about the star you call the Sun and the many fascinating objects that orbit this average, yellow star.

1. How old is the sun? Which gas is most plentiful in the sun?

2. Name the four inner planets. The surface temperature of Venus is 400 Celsius. What is that equal to in Fahrenheit?

3. Which planet has two moons named Deimos and Phobos? What do these names mean in English?

4. What is Jupiteržs "Great Red Spot". How large is it? What are the names of Jupiteržs four largest moons? Why are these moons called the "Galilean" moons?

5. Describe Saturnžs rings. How many moons revolve around Saturn?

6. Solar Mathematics: The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Approximately how long does its take a light beam to travel from the sun to the Earth?

7. Logistical Problem: Pretend you are the Chief Scientist organizing an expedition to the planet Mars. Your mission is to gather information and data about the Martian surface and atmosphere. What special equipment and supplies would you take to accomplish this task? Explain how each item enables your crew to safely complete the mission.
