"It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end." -Ursula K. LeGuin

Dear Colleagues:

The theme for National Women's History Month, March 2001 - "Celebrating Women of Courage and Vision" - emphasizes the joy in recognizing women's accomplishments. By honoring women's courage and vision, we set a standard for ourselves and provide a beacon of inspiration for future generations. The path from second-class citizenship to equal participant (a work in progress) is paved with stories of intelligence, idealism, and heroism. Of particular interest is the relationship of the Women's Movement to other, present-day equality efforts; African Americans, Native Americans, and struggles in developing countries. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce our students to the history, purpose, and individuals who began the struggle and carry freedom's standard today.
